Oliver Clyde (“O.C.”) Fuller -- born in 1860 on a plantation in Georgia -- moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1892 after marrying socialite Kate (“Kitty”) Caswell, with whom he had six children.Founder of the Wisconsin Trust Co. and president of the First Wisconsin National Bank and First Wisconsin Trust Co. (which became Firstar Corp. and US Bancorp), he was also a golf pioneer who founded Milwaukee golf, tennis, yacht and athletic clubs and led organizations ranging from Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance to the American Bankers’ Association. His 1938 autobiography offers glimpses into the Civil War aftermath, turn-of-the-century high society, the Depression, World War I and more.Follow him and Kitty on their travels by ship and rail to Mexico, Europe, Barbados and the Bahamas. Peer into their mansions in Atlanta and Milwaukee. Hobnob with prominent politicians and wheeler-dealers. Immerse yourself in history, through the eyes of a man who placed a strong stamp upon it."[In the 1920s, O.C. Fuller] was a name familiar to all Milwaukee. It stood for banking, business, civic service, social and economic thought, loyalty, patriotism and friendliness...He belonged to an era which many of us fear we will not see again. He was prominent and active in what may be written in history as perhaps the happiest and most striking time in the development of Milwaukee; and much of that history may be credited to to his goodly influence and cooperation. He was an example of the kind of men who leave their personal imprint on a com munity; and in his case it was always for its good." — Philip Grau, W.E.M.P. radiotorial, Aug. 19, 1942 Read more
