From the Manufacturer Based on an R5 Alpine body, modified by the Heuliez coachbuilders, the Renault 5 Turbo was presented as a "concept-car" at the Salon de l 'Automobile de Paris 1978 (car show). After different technical solutions such as a V6 engine or integral transmission were considered, the final version was powered by a centrally positioned four-cylinder longitudinal engine with rear-wheel drive. Group 4 approved on 1 September 1980, the prototype's first trial took place a few months earlier at the Giro d'ltalia. Because of the limited budget due to their simultaneous involvement in Formula 1, Renault-Sport only raced in selected legs of the 1982 Rally World Championship, chosen according to their commercial or advertising impact.
